SETTING BACKGROUND

The Imperial Radch Trilogy is set in a farflung space opera future, primarily in the imperial polity known as the Radch. A previously all conquering empire, it has ceased expanding its borders due to internal conflict within the vast clone-mind network of its immortal dictator, Anaander Mianaai. There are artificial intelligences that are the equals of humans in thought and feeling which control starships and space stations and a great deal of political intrigue and a few gunfights as well. The theme of the story deals primarily with empire, oppression, societal stratification, and what it means to be a person.

HISTORY

Tisarwat is born to a Radchaai family and has what must be considered a fairly normal childhood. At some point in her teenage years, she takes the Imperial Radchaai aptitude tests and places well enough to be assigned to a military post. She goes through military training and is to be placed into a position. At this point, the leader of the Imperial Radch, Anaander Mianaai, decides to user her as a tool to monitor Breq. She is forcibly incorporated into Anaander Mianaai's clone hive-mind. The process turns out to be rushed and messy. Breq, noticing the incongruities of Tisarwat's behavior, forcibly separates Tisarwat from Anaander Mianaai. As a result, she is left with a strange mixture of the memories of a vain, silly seventeen year old 'baby lieutenant' and the thousands of years of memories and experience of Anaander Mianaai. Her original personality, whatever it had been, had been supplanted by a new mixture of these two people. She decides to use her knowledge of Anaander and political acumen to aid Breq and becomes instrumental in improving relationships with the people of the Undergarden on Athoek Station.

PERSONALITY

Tisarwat's personality is strange and can bcome across as mercurial and flighty. At times, she has great political or social insight. She has a perspective of someone who has governed for a millennia and who has acted as an expert social manipulator, allowing her to speak insightful wisdom. Often times she can appear far older than she looks, which can be disconcerting for some thanks to her apparent youth. On the other hand, she is still the teenager she seems to be. She has a fondness for clothing and fashion that might seem too loud, obnoxious, vain, or flighty by someone older. Her first paycheck was used to change her eyes to what is described as a 'ridiculous' shade of lilac. She falls into despair when feelings aren't returned. She feels things deeply and keenly, despite having a great deal of knowledge and insight that should help her deal with these things.

Tisarwat still falls deeply into puppy love with people she admires and struggles to cope when feelings aren't mutual or aren't returned in the same way. She is a teenager, old before her time.

At the same time, she is aware of the image she projects and what people might assume of her, and can use this to her advantage by appearing more foolish or ignorant than she truly is in order to fool people into underestimating her. She is a charming young person, who has a friendly demeanor and a love of small talk and political discussion. Tisarwat is a study in contradictions brought on by the traumatic melding of two minds. Worse, she is acutely aware of her status and has a great deal of trauma and unhappiness about what was done to her. She knows that she isn't and can never be the 'old' Tisarwat before Anaander Mianaai plugged herself into Tisarwat's head. On the other hand, she's not Anaander Mianaai and never will be. She has a great deal of anger, grief, and resentment directed towards the Tyrant and hates what was done to her.

She struggles deeply with this division of her identity and does not even properly see herself as the 'old' Tisarwat any longer. She is a new Tisarwat, and is afraid of what that means especially in regards to her relationship with the 'old' Tisarwat's family.

CANON POWERS

As a member of the Radchaai military, she has a series of cybernetic implants designed to help her do her job properly. These implants allow her to communicate with and interact with the starships in use by the Radchaai Military as well as to communicate with other crewmembers at long distances. Additional implants, meant to allow her to be in contact with the clone-minds of Anaander Mianaai, were installed but removed by Fleet Captain Breq Mianaai.

POWER SELECTION

ABILITIES

Tisarwat's main strengths lay along social and political lines. She's a charming and friendly young person with a keen knowledge of human psychology and political thought, which she uses in order to forge agreements and mend rifts, or to needle the best deals possible she can out of others. Being young and in the military, she is also physically fit and has rudimentary knowledge of how to use Radchaai firearms. She is not very skilled at hand-to-hand combat and gets zero-gravity sickness.

Despite her political and social acument, she can sometimes be limited by her own volatile emotions and failure to always consider things from others points of view.

SETTING/SUITABILITY
Please answer all of the following. Keep in mind that if a character is not suited to a stressful intrigue and action setting, or if a character is aged 11-15, you will have to work extra hard to justify how they can function in the game as an equal (or learn how to quickly).

How do you expect your character to respond to the setting? Even if they plan to rebel in the long term, will they be able to at least obey enough to not get shocked to death?

Discomfort. Being stuck in what she considers a foreign, alien backwater is going to be hard for a young up-and-coming Radchaai but she'll deal with it. She's used to getting on with it, even if she'll complain. She's also used to living in a totalitarian dictatorship, so she knows how to stay quiet and not rock the boat.

What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

For her to grow a little, let her mature and feel more confident in herself as an independent person. She's struggling from the trauma of having two minds smushed together in an inexpert way and doesn't quite know who she is or where she's going yet, so getting that development seems like a fun trajectory.

Does your character currently have skills that would allow them to adapt, survive, and do the heroic things being asked of them? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

She has skills that will help and is young with the mind of an adept social and political manipulator. She learns quickly and can go on the fly while she figures shit out.

If they're not used to cooperating with others, what makes you think they'll be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

She's already used to cooperating!

Will your character have long-term plans to rebel against Jorgmund? If so, how? Will they betray the other PCs and cooperate with Jorgmund? If so, how do you plan to handle the negative CR that might arise?

Eventually, yes. In the meantime, she may appear to be 'one of the good ones' and only reveal her double-agent-ness to a few trusted others once she gets settled. I think that sort of negative CR could be really fun and would let her use her strengths to help the rest of the kidnapped characters on the rig. In the meantime she'd likely try and hide the Anaander side of her by playing up the flighty seventeen year-old junior officer bit in the hopes of getting less scrutiny.

II. The characters are released to the rig and given (3) questions from the prompt above but instead told to do them in the form of a video journal. This atmosphere is slightly more relaxed.

[ The device's camera (so clunky, so primitive) is set up and Tisarwat settles down on her bunk, setting cross-legged and looking more than a little disgruntled by the whole thing. She sighs, then sets to it. ]

I suppose I have a bit of an assignment to take care of, which means... answering these questions they've handed down for me to put into this little video journal. Ahem.

[ She takes a breath and holds out the sheet of paper that she was given. Frowns. ]

First... "You’re a new addition to the crayon box, what color would you be and why?" Oh! This one is rather easy, don't you think?

[ Tisarwat beams a bright smile and a finger points at her eyes, all teenage glee. ]

Lilac, of course. It's my favorite color and I think it just looks so striking. Like me! Isn't it such a lovely shade? I knew you'd all agree.

[ She laughs and glances down the list towards the next question. Whatever it is, there's a shift in demeanor from light and happy to something more serious and reserved almost immediately. ]

Mm. "If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?" Well I think that's rather obvious, don't you? I'd rather be back on Athoek Station. Or at lest on Mercy of Kalr. I have so many responsibilities I need to see too! I hope the fleet captain is managing without me... I feel so guilty not being there to help her, you know?

[ Another long sigh. She doesn't stay in that little emotional dip for long, though! She smiles as if she's completely unbothered, then looks over her list once again. ]

Right, last one. We're almost there. Let's see... "You’re on your way to your best friend’s wedding and your boss calls and says a client needs something, what do you do?"

Well, if the client is quite that important, then I suppose I'd have to go. I know weddings are important, but if it's a matter of ensuring my superior's patronage and client aren't troubled, I haven't a choice, do I? I would have to apologize most sincerely for missing the wedding and then go help my superior. Unless, of course, my friend is higher ranked, maybe? It's hard to say. Balancing justice, propriety, and benefit in that situation would so difficult! Makes me break into hives just thinking of it. Depending on the families involved it could be quite difficult, as far as decisions go...

[ She trails off, apparently lost in thought as the nature of this hypothetical situation, then straightens. ]

Ah. I hope that answer is appropriate? If not, do please let me know! I'll re-record something else for you to fix it right away! Do take care, honoreds!

ADDITIONAL INFO
Will she get to have her gloves? It's incredibly rude in Radchaai society not to wear gloves and she'll be flustered as heck without them.

FINAL QUESTIONS
The players won't know what the mods are doing with these questions until sometime later.

Will your character suspect some kind of guiding intelligence has brought them to the game? Or will they think it was random or done by Jorgmund?

She suspects it was done on purpose by Jorgmund, though is not sure if she was picked randomly or not.

If they think it was something other than Jorgmund, like God or some other force of fate, what character traits do they think of that intelligence as having? Is it cruel or kind? Capriciously punishing them or doing it for good reason? N/A

Interests: With Tisarwat, I'm hoping to dig into political and social stuff, since that what she's good at. Also, struggles with identity. She is an amalgamation of two different people as the result of an exceedingly traumatic process, which has left her with a strange mingled identity that is neither strictly one or the other.

Canon World

In no more than 500 words, please describe the world your character comes from. Don't try to cover everything, just focus on the key points that an unfamiliar reviewer would absolutely have to know in order to understand your character and their abilities.

Please make sure to read and comply with the FAQ sections on character abilities.

Suggested Nerfs

Many (if not most) abilities from other canons will be nerfed or adapted to Thedas. We want rifters to be unique and retain what makes them fun to play, but not to be so powerful that they render natives and especially unpowered characters superfluous to missions. A list of universally applied power limits is in the FAQ (http://faderifting.dreamwidth.org/966.html#nerfs). These nerfs will apply to all rifters unless we discuss a specific exception with you. Additionally, we may place other limits on rifters' abilities to prevent them from being too powerful compared to natives and unpowered characters. So if you have a high-powered character, we encourage you to use this section of the app to suggest your own nerfs or let us know what's most and least important to you about their powerset so we can take it into consideration when we establish limits.

Arrival Inventory

What will your character have with them in the dream they arrive from? Please go ahead and list weapons, technology, and magical artifacts, though they may disappear in the passage through the Fade. And please note that we do mean what they have with them in their dream; they can arrive in plainclothes with their usual belongings from a dream about buying groceries, or they can arrive in a gorilla suit with a deflated hot air balloon from a dream that was a little less mundane.

Humanization

Please describe any ways that your character differs from a normal real world human. Characters who don't closely resemble humans/dwarves/elves/Qunari will be shifted into one of those forms by their passage through the Fade, so if the rules require that your character exit the rift in a different form, what form would you like that to be?

Fit

Is there a reason you think this character would be particularly interesting in this setting? Are there particular aspects of the world you're hoping to dig into? Things about your character you think Thedas will help you explore? Will they have a personal connection to an issue, or act as a foil to another character/group/opinion? Give us a sense of what you think your character will bring to the game world and what you think they might take away from it. Basically, why did you choose this character in this game? This shouldn't be more than 300 words.

SAMPLES

Please provide 2 samples. It doesn't matter if they're written or linked and we don't care if you prefer brackets or normal punctuation, but at least one must take place in the game world, and at least one must be a log rather than network tags (or their setting-appropriate equivalent). They can be of any length, as long as they provide a sense of your character's voice and internal narrative. If we feel they aren't sufficient, we'll ask you for more.
